Set Free by Truth (John 8:32)

John 8:32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

In John 8:32, Jesus promises that the truth sets people free. However, what does he mean?

Here, “being set free” means to be set free from being a slave. A slave is a person who under the authority of a master. A slave obediently does whatever his master tells him to do (Rom. 6:16). Once a slave is set free, then he is no longer a slave, and his former master no longer has authority over him.

Jesus clarified that he was talking about freedom from sin. If a person is living sinfully, then it is because he is a slave to sin, and sin is his master (v. 34).

According to Jesus, the only way to be set free from this slavery is to remain in his word. If we know the Son, Jesus Christ, then we know the truth which sets us free, and we are no longer slaves to sin!
